Bone Builder

Bone builder supplements do not always increase bone density. While they may help build bone mass, their performance may not offset natural bone loss. The result is a net loss in bone density, even though the loss would have been greater without intake of the bone builder.

That is one reason why many calcium supplement companies only claim to prevent bone loss.  These brands have not always improved bone density over its starting value, on average, in clinical trials. It may have happened in some studies, but not consistently.

AdvaCAL is notably different. In each of four clinical studies measuring bone density change over time,bone-builder | Article AdvaCAL users, on average, reported higher bone density numbers than when the study began.  In two of those studies, the change from baseline was statistically significant.  In the other two, AdvaCAL user improvement was statistically significant to that of placebo users.*

In the first clinical study, men and postmenopausal women taking AdvaCAL increased their bone density on average by 8% more than those taking a placebo after three years.* 


In the second study, elderly women taking AdvaCAL increased their bone density on average by 6.6% more than those taking a placebo after two years.  In this and the other study, the end bone density averages were higher than the beginning values, evidence that AdvaCAL is not a typical bone builder.*   Your results will vary.

Depending on age and other life changes, bone loss may be unavoidable. During menopause, women lose up to 3% of bone mass yearly. Even an effective supplement such as AdvaCAL, cannot fully offset that rapid rate of loss. Fortunately, postmenopausal bone loss is much slower. An effective bone builder supplement may well be able to compensate for some of the menopausal bone loss.

What are the most important ingredients in a bone builder product?  Most experts agree that calcium plays a significant role. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) removes calcium from bone when insufficient levels of calcium are absorbed from food.  Calcium sources and tabletting/encapsulation techniques vary, both of which can impact calcium absorption. Try to find a calcium source with a proven track record in building and – hopefully -- increasing bone density.  Also, favor brands that follow US Pharmacopeia (USP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, like AdvaCAL.

 The next key bone builder nutrient is vitamin D, which aids calcium bioavailability. There are only two nutrient forms here – either D3 or D2.   D3 is naturally sourced and preferred by many people for that reason.  Examine how much vitamin D a supplement contains.  Some experts now recommend 1000 IU of vitamin D daily. Several prefer 1700 IU. Many calcium brands offer only 400 IU of vitamin D daily.
